The defendant also allegedly wrote, "To be honest, I had hoped to keep this secret till I died of old age. I am sorry to involve you."

Mr. Gray provided further details, explaining that the mother had viewed a video of the suspect released the day after the shooting and remarked to her husband that it resembled their son. She addressed the resemblance with her son over the phone, but he claimed to have been home sick on the day of the incident.

Subsequently, the father also confronted the defendant, who reportedly responded by implying he might consider taking his own life, according to the prosecutor. Eventually, the suspect was persuaded to visit his parents' home, where he allegedly hinted at being the attacker and expressed a desire to "end it" rather than face imprisonment, as stated by Mr. Gray.
With assistance from a family friend, a retired deputy sheriff, his parents managed to convince him to surrender to the authorities, leading to his arrest late on Thursday, 33 hours after the shooting.

The mother revealed to investigators that her son had become increasingly political in recent years, showing greater support for gay and transgender rights and entering a relationship with a transgender individual.

Mr. Gray noted that the conservative influencer was responding to a question about mass shootings perpetrated by transgender individuals when the gunshot occurred, striking Kirk in the neck and causing him to immediately slump to the ground. The shot passed near other individuals, including children and the person who posed the question to Kirk, according to the prosecutor.

DNA Present on the Trigger of the Rifle
Mr. Gray stated that the suspect's DNA had been discovered on the trigger of the rifle used in the shooting incident.
Additionally, he mentioned that the suspect's father had believed the weapon resembled a bolt-action rifle that had previously belonged to the suspect's grandfather. Following the shooting, the father attempted to contact the suspect, requesting a photograph of the rifle, but received no response, according to Mr. Gray.
